We’re kicking things into hyperspace with the return of a true space shooter classic — BOSCONIAN — launching onto the arcade floor TOMORROW at 3PM at the Electric Starship Arcade! 🛸💥
Originally released by Namco in 1981, Bosconian was a true pioneer in the golden age of arcade shooters. With its innovative gameplay, advanced features, and total freedom of movement, it pushed the boundaries of what arcade games could do — and now, you can experience it for yourself right here at the Starship!
✨ Why Bosconian Is a Big Deal
This isn’t just another retro cabinet—we’re talking about one of the most groundbreaking arcade games of the early ‘80s, and one that remains surprisingly rare today. Let’s break down what makes it so special:
🔹 Voice Synthesis in 1981?!
That’s right! Bosconian was one of the first arcade games to feature voice synthesis. The game’s robotic voice would call out commands like “Blast Off!” and “Alert! Alert!”, adding a thrilling layer of immersion in an era where most games still relied on beeps and bloops. This feature gave Bosconian a distinct sci-fi identity that really set it apart.
🔹 360-Degree Freedom of Movement
Most space shooters at the time locked players into side-scrolling or vertical-scrolling movement. Not Bosconian. With free-roaming 8-way directional control, players could fly wherever they wanted, taking on enemy bases from any angle. This open combat style allowed for more strategy and player agency—a major innovation for the genre.
🔹 Color Radar and On-Screen Scanning
Bosconian introduced a radar system that displayed enemy base locations offering players a full tactical view of the battlefield. Color radar in 1981? That was almost unheard of. This gave the game a unique combat flow and pushed the boundaries of what arcade tech could do at the time.
🔹 Rare and Hard to Find Today
Why haven’t more people played Bosconian in arcades today? Because many of the original cabinets were converted into Galaga machines by Midway during the arcade boom. Galaga was a massive hit, and many Bosconian units were sacrificed to meet demand, making surviving Bosconian cabinets relatively rare. We’re proud to have one of these classic survivors right here at Electric Starship Arcade.
🎮 Why You Need to Play Bosconian
Whether you’re a longtime arcade junkie or just discovering retro gaming for the first time, Bosconian is a must-play experience. It’s fast, it’s fun, and it’s a perfect example of early arcade innovation.
Come take the controls and show us what you’ve got. Can you defend the galaxy from the alien threat? Only one way to find out.
